ARTIST STATEMENT:

My contribution to Among the Trees brings together a series of abstract ink paintings on cotton and a range of oil works developed during a residency at La Motte farm. The works respond to the farm's winter landscape, where lush greens and shifting light create a softened, atmospheric field of observation.

 

The textile works were made both in the studio on the farm and on the stoep outside it, looking out into the grove of large oak trees. This proximity inspired a more immediate, responsive way of working, where artwork and context remain closely linked. Suspended in the Ateljee, these textile works invite viewers to walk among the trees. They welcome the outside in, and nod gently to the environment that informed their making. This marks a new exploration in my practice, moving painting into textile form and into direct dialogue with air, light, and setting.

 

Alongside these are oil paintings made in my studio, developed in response to the same environment but from a greater distance. Across both bodies of work, a shared palette and a softened, blurred handling of paint create continuity and hold the works together through atmosphere rather than subject.

 

Together, the works consider different ways of being in a landscape, from immersion to reflection, where forms dissolve and colour becomes language.
